It is a strange and wonderful thing when a performance suddenly sends an electric shock through both the performers and the audience. We had had a wonderfully pleasant concert thus far, and as that word connotes, enjoyable, satisfying, but not particularly remarkable. Then [the Borromeo joined by Andrei Baumann] started the Dvorak, and in the first few bars it was apparent to everyone, not least themselves that something extraordinary was happening! I am a passionate audient, but know nothing about performance that would enable me to explain why this was, but my heart started to soar. The music became a kinetic experience. Lyrical and dramatic by turns, poignant and then reassuring. For me it was a blissful experience, and for all the audience, I think.”

“…it was unanimously felt that the concert was exceptional and unforgettable! The audience marveled at Andrei’s incomparable technique and dynamics. After the concert almost everyone went to thank Andrei for the beautiful musical experience.”

“Andrei Baumann played each tone with enormous conviction and expressiveness. His performance complimented itself, portraying feelings of destiny with dark sounds. He began with Franz Schubert’s “Der Müller und der Bach”, transcribed by Franz Liszt. The pianist managed to convey the lyrical content of the piece with his delicate and cultivated touch. His delicate brilliance produced a wonderfully self-contained creation. Andrei Baumann showed that he knew how to tackle the tremendous atmospheric gestures in Franz Schubert’s Sonata in A minor, D784, as well as attend to the small details in this very demanding work. His development in the Andante achieved an almost songlike rapture. In closing, Andrei Baumann once again won over his listeners with his brilliant virtuosity in Frederic Chopin’s Etude in F Major op. 10.”

“My meetings with pianist Andrei Baumann are connected with a unique, musically personal experience, since for me his modesty, his rapt playing, his exceptional aura and even in his appearance, he personifies Franz Schubert.”

“…Andrei Baumann tastefully and fully brought out the expressivity, over long stretches, in this already seemingly romantic concerto.”

“…Andrei Baumann understands the highs and lows of the moods in Schubert’s music…”

“… The pianist’s fingers, moving speedily and confidently, evoked memories of bygone days and created an atmosphere filled with heartfelt nostalgic emotions. One felt as though one was in a forest in springtime listening to the chirping of little birds in the shrubbery. In contrast, the pianist offered totally different, stormy visions evoking other memories. My thoughts turned to the homeland on March 25, 1949: to the deportations and terrorist acts that occurred. We left the concert with very warm feelings, wishing that other, fellow-Estonians would have the opportunity to hear Andrei Baumann play.”
